Outreach Committee
The BMES Outreach committee promotes Biomedical Engineering and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education within our community. The committee focuses on K-12 classroom visits, but also participates in and even hosts several larger events for both our K-12 and campus communities. Our undergraduate volunteers encourage students to think about and apply engineering-based solutions to real world problems.
"Project-in-a-Box"
A majority of our outreach events involve an interactive activity using everyday materials and a creative connection to engineering, the body, and/or medicine. We have compiled several projects for each age range over the years and we continuously work to improve their effectiveness. Some of the favorites include: Super-Powered DNA, Edible Lip Gloss, Strawberry DNA Extraction, and One Helmet of an Activity.

On-Campus Event for High Schoolers with Interests in STEM (Fall)
BMES started this event in 2015 to introduce high school students to the field of engineering and to encourage them to consider engineering as a potential major. We invite student representatives from each engineering discipline to present interactive activities and answer questions about their majors. The events itself is free to attend. Please email bmesatucd@gmail.com if you, your child, or even your entire engineering program, would like to attend!
E-Week
Showcase of Engineering Fields at UC Davis (February)
BMES officers adopted this week-long campus event in 2017. The event involves free food, guest speakers, interactive activities, a club fair, and much more! BMES helps organize the entire event, while also hosting our own events and participating in the club fair.

Outreach Committee Recognition
The BMES outreach committee is composed of numerous volunteers that participate in the above events and many more. We have been awarded numerous awards and scholarships by both UC Davis and outside organizations. There is an elected Outreach Committee Chair that oversees the Outreach Committee, but their role would be impossible without the help of a select few outreachers each year. These outreach committee members have gone above and beyond by both attending volunteer opportunities and helping improve our activities, leading their own events, seeking out new club contacts, and much more.
2016-2017 Outstanding Performance:
Valerie Cote - 3rd Year, Medical Devices Specialization
Kyra Smart - 2nd Year, Medical Devices Specialization
Planning an event for you!
Do you like what you see? Are you a K-12 teacher or otherwise involved with our future generation? We would love to plan an event just for you! Please contact bmesatucd@gmail.com and we will connect you to the current Director of Outreach. We have taught computer skills to senior citizens in the past, and are always open to hear new and creative ideas!
