Mentor-Mentee Sign Ups
What: Sign up for our Mentor-Mentee program! If you are a first or second year, please sign up as a mentee. If you are a third or fourth year, please sign up as a mentor. This is a great program for mentees to learn and receive advice from their mentors about topics such as research opportunities, internships, courses, or activities on campus. Mentors can also be paired with a BME graduate student. If you are an upperclassman looking for a way to give back to the community, becoming a mentor is the perfect opportunity!

B-Hours Sign Ups
What: B-Hours is looking for more participants! The B-Hours program is a project-based entity that gathers engineers from several backgrounds and provides a hands-on experience opportunity. In B-Hours, we work on project-based teams to find user needs, address them by building a prototype-able designs, and manufacture a final product for a client. So far, our program has undergraduate from majors such as Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Officer Shadowing
What: If you are interested in becoming a BMES officer for the 2020-2021 academic year, we will be hosting officer shadowing meetings via Zoom during Week 4 and 5. Joining these meetings will allow you to see how the executive board functions and how we prepare events.
Currently, these officer shadowing meetings are scheduled for Wednesday 4/22 and 4/29 from 6:30-7:30pm. Attached below are the 2020-2021 Officer Roles for you to gain more insight of each officer's responsibilities.

This Friday, April 10th at 1pm join Roland Calloway for an informal Zoom conference about his experience transitioning into industry. Roland was the treasurer for BMES last year and graduated from Davis with a Biomedical Engineering degree. He is currently working for Medtronic as a Process Development Engineer in Santa Rosa. Come with questions regarding his experience applying for jobs and as a new entrant into the industry.

Lauren is a 2019 UC Davis graduate with a Biomedical Engineering degree and is now working at Biomarin as a research assistant isolating novel, naturally occurring adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) to be used in gene therapy vectors. Lauren was involved in the Silva lab for 3 years as an undergraduate and most recently was our Director of Research on the BMES board. She is a big fan of cells and the squishy side of biomedical engineering, and is excited to answer all the questions undergraduates have about successfully transitioning into industry and her experience working at Biomarin.

Nina Vertelkina is a sales engineer for the biopharmaceutical division at Watson-Marlow, specializing in technical sales of GMP-approved consumable products and capital equipment. She works with various end users within the Bay Area, including folks from procurement, process engineers to production and senior managers. Having an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences and having recently completed an Executive MBA, she is inclined to take a more business-related route within the biopharma industry, having had previous bench top and production experience within a laboratory environment. For any students interested in a similar route or inclined to go towards a similar direction, she is happy to discuss and answer any questions.

Jeff specializes in neurovascular stent design, working as an R&D Engineer at Stryker. He is currently designing generations of neurovascular devices with international physician and academic partnerships, discovering novel ways to treat strokes. Prior to Stryker, he explored other avenues such as designing peripheral med devices, executing growth marketing, and founding startups. Jeff obtained his Doctorate from UC Davis studying cell/molecular bio at UCD Medical, and his M. Eng from Cornell. He hopes his experience in finding a career path post-graduation will help provide answers and direction to young engineers though an open Q&A.

Michael graduated UC Davis in 2018 and is now working at Confluent Medical, where they manufacture Medical Devices for the large BME companies. His Fremont site specializes in Metrology, he designs, builds, and validates measurement processes for production on site and in Costa Rica. Michael was the 2017-18 BMES President and has offered to review resumes after the call concludes.

Hannah is a 2018 UC Davis graduate with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. She has worked as a Supplier Quality Engineer at Abbott Structural Heart for the past year and a half. Her job involves managing supplier manufacturing changes for components within Abbott's MitraClip device. Hannah determines if a change to the component's manufacturing process will impact their product and how to safely implement and document it. She went from being the Mentor/Mentee Chair in BMES while she was in school to Abbott's Northern California Women in STEM Outreach Chair (and have given a UC Davis student tour of Abbott's facilities in the past). Hannah is excited to answer any questions you have related to industry, school, and working at Abbott!

Rose has been a product manager for 5 years now, first at Aex Innovations Lab and now at Advanced Micro Systems, Inc in the datacenter GPU product team. She's currently designing the next gen visualization and machine learning GPU. She graduated from UC Davis with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering in 2015. At UC Davis, Rose was part of BMES for all four years where she created the mentor-mentee program and Make-A-Thon. She also worked at the UC Davis Fire Department and in Dr. Yamada's Lab. Rose is excited to share her post-graduation journey towards finding a career, the choice to seemingly leave biotech, and experiences as a female in tech. She can also share what she looks for when she interviews or review resumes. She looks forward to providing up and coming BMEs with mentorship and answering any questions.

In B-Hours, we work on project-based teams to find user needs, address them by building a prototype-able designs, and manufacture a final product for a client. So far, our program has undergraduate from majors such as Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. What: Come out to practice your interviewing skills! Employees from Genentech will be conducting the interviews and providing feedback so you can improve your techniques. Officer Shadowing
What: If you are interested in becoming a BMES officer for the 2020-2021 academic year, we will be hosting officer shadowing meetings via Zoom during Week 4 and 5. Joining these meetings will allow you to see how the executive board functions and how we prepare events.

Roland was the treasurer for BMES last year and graduated from Davis with a Biomedical Engineering degree. He is currently working for Medtronic as a Process Development Engineer in Santa Rosa. Come with questions regarding his experience applying for jobs and as a new entrant into the industry.

Lauren is a 2019 UC Davis graduate with a Biomedical Engineering degree and is now working at Biomarin as a research assistant isolating novel, naturally occurring adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) to be used in gene therapy vectors. Lauren was involved in the Silva lab for 3 years as an undergraduate and most recently was our Director of Research on the BMES board. She is a big fan of cells and the squishy side of biomedical engineering, and is excited to answer all the questions undergraduates have about successfully transitioning into industry and her experience working at Biomarin.

Nina Vertelkina is a sales engineer for the biopharmaceutical division at Watson-Marlow, specializing in technical sales of GMP-approved consumable products and capital equipment. She works with various end users within the Bay Area, including folks from procurement, process engineers to production and senior managers. Having an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences and having recently completed an Executive MBA, she is inclined to take a more business-related route within the biopharma industry, having had previous bench top and production experience within a laboratory environment. For any students interested in a similar route or inclined to go towards a similar direction, she is happy to discuss and answer any questions.

Jeff specializes in neurovascular stent design, working as an R&D Engineer at Stryker. He is currently designing generations of neurovascular devices with international physician and academic partnerships, discovering novel ways to treat strokes. Prior to Stryker, he explored other avenues such as designing peripheral med devices, executing growth marketing, and founding startups. Jeff obtained his Doctorate from UC Davis studying cell/molecular bio at UCD Medical, and his M. Eng from Cornell. He hopes his experience in finding a career path post-graduation will help provide answers and direction to young engineers though an open Q&A.

Michael graduated UC Davis in 2018 and is now working at Confluent Medical, where they manufacture Medical Devices for the large BME companies. His Fremont site specializes in Metrology, he designs, builds, and validates measurement processes for production on site and in Costa Rica. Michael was the 2017-18 BMES President and has offered to review resumes after the call concludes.

Hannah is a 2018 UC Davis graduate with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. She has worked as a Supplier Quality Engineer at Abbott Structural Heart for the past year and a half. Her job involves managing supplier manufacturing changes for components within Abbott's MitraClip device. Hannah determines if a change to the component's manufacturing process will impact their product and how to safely implement and document it. She went from being the Mentor/Mentee Chair in BMES while she was in school to Abbott's Northern California Women in STEM Outreach Chair (and have given a UC Davis student tour of Abbott's facilities in the past). Hannah is excited to answer any questions you have related to industry, school, and working at Abbott!

Rose has been a product manager for 5 years now, first at Aex Innovations Lab and now at Advanced Micro Systems, Inc in the datacenter GPU product team. She's currently designing the next gen visualization and machine learning GPU. She graduated from UC Davis with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering in 2015. At UC Davis, Rose was part of BMES for all four years where she created the mentor-mentee program and Make-A-Thon. She also worked at the UC Davis Fire Department and in Dr. Yamada's Lab. Rose is excited to share her post-graduation journey towards finding a career, the choice to seemingly leave biotech, and experiences as a female in tech. She can also share what she looks for when she interviews or review resumes. She looks forward to providing up and coming BMEs with mentorship and answering any questions.
